New study to assess the risk that birds collide with wind turbines

Husum,

In the study, probabilistic methods were tested to determine the mortality risk of breeding bird species vulnerable to collisions with wind turbines.

Graphical 3D representation in which a bird of prey flies above a wind turbine. The collision risk of the bird with the wind turbine is shown with different colours.

Aim of this pilot study, which BioConsult SH carried out together with Bionum, was to develop and test probabilistic (probability-theoretical) methods to determine the project-related mortality risk of vulnerable breeding bird species.

The pilot study was commissioned by the Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and initiated by sub-working group 2 “Probabilistics” of the Conference of Environment Ministers (UMK) within the framework of the acceleration of the energy transition and the associated approval procedures.
