Offshore environmental monitoring
In close consultation with all the institutions involved, we support your offshore project regarding nature conservation issues from the initial planning stage through to operational monitoring.
Europe-wide environmental monitoring and nature conservation consulting
Reliable surveys are a crucial basis for environmental planning, impact assessments and research projects. In the offshore sector, our focus is on collecting data on marine mammals (especially harbour porpoises), migratory and resting birds as well as bats.
We offer comprehensive nature conservation support for offshore wind farm projects, submarine cable laying and other linear infrastructure projects. We supervise national and international projects in accordance with the specifications of the authorities involved.
The methodological basis for data collection is the standard investigation concept (StUK4) published by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, in whose preparation we played a key role. If necessary, we will propose project-specific changes to the StUK4 and coordinate these with the clients and institutions involved.
We also prepare feasibility studies and investigation concepts tailored to the specific projects.
We provide qualified personnel throughout Europe with all the necessary certificates and training to support offshore projects in accordance with the client's requirements.
We have extensive technical equipment at our disposal, including marine radar equipment, range finders and microphone systems. We also provide special equipment such as C- and F-PODs for detecting harbour porpoise clicks, including various anchoring systems.
Our services in detail
- Development of investigation concepts for all issues relating to anthropogenic interventions in the offshore area
- Environmental monitoring
- Comprehensive surveys according to StUK4 (partly with partners)
- Ship-based transect surveys (marine mammals, birds, bats)
- Aerial transect surveys
- HiDef digital aerial surveys for birds and marine mammals
- Visual aerial counts of seal haul-out sites
- Radar ornithology (ship- and platform-based, manual and digital) to record migratory birds
- Use of special bird radar systems for the detection of migratory birds
- Visual and acoustic detection of bird migration from ships and platforms
- Provision and service of C-POD/F-POD stations for the detection of harbour porpoises
- Provision and operation of recording boxes for the detection of migratory birds and bats
- Telemetric monitoring of seabirds (red-throated divers, sea ducks, gulls) and migratory birds that regularly cross the sea (e.g. cranes)
- Camera-based monitoring of birds near wind turbines using AI-based detection and analysis
- Use of professional laser rangefinders to accurately determine flight heights and to create 3D flight sequences
- Data analysis and reporting (expert reports, evaluation, statements)
