Company profile – Who we are

BioConsult SH GmbH & Co. KG is an independent ecological research and consulting company, based in Husum. Dr Georg Nehls founded the company in 1998. Since 2022, Dr Georg Nehls and Dr Thilo Liesenjohann are managing directors and partners. 

Our work focuses on environmental planning and expert advice as well as ecological research and data collection.

What started as a three-person office in 1998 has now grown into an interdisciplinary and international team with over 160 employees. In addition to the two office locations in Husum, there is a further office in Hamburg Altona since 2004.

BioConsult SH is also closely associated with the English company HiDef Aerial Surveying Ltd, whose majority shareholder is Dr Georg Nehls. Another associated company is the French company Biotope SAS, which has been a minority shareholder of BioConsult SH since 2022.

Together, the three companies form a European alliance with around 800 employees (Alliance for Nature). As the fourth shareholder, BioConsult SH Mitarbeiterbeteiligung GmbH holds a share of BioConsult SH GmbH & Co. KG on behalf of the employees.

ProTecBird GmbH (development and distribution of AI-based bird detection systems) and PredictBird GmbH (25 %, together with TB Raab, TNL Buttenheim GmbH and Moritz Mercker) also belong to BioConsult SH GmbH & Co. Since 2025, Marilim Gesellschaft für Gewässeruntersuchung mbH is also part of our small network of companies.

Over the years, BioConsult SH's scope of activity and thematic focus have expanded in line with our growth and broader range of services. We are still active both regionally in Schleswig-Holstein and in the neighbouring northern federal states. 

At the same time, however, we work in many projects throughout Germany and internationally in the fields of environment, renewable energies and infrastructure change – especially in the offshore sector and in co-operation with our partner companies.

In the field of environmental planning and consulting, we prepare expert reports, species protection reports, FFH assessments and environmental impact studies for private and public clients. This also includes the associated field work and data collection. 

In addition to the service sector, we have extensive experience in ecological environmental research in terrestrial and marine areas. In numerous national and international projects, we carry out surveys and assessments of biological baseline data as well as the development and evaluation of project-specific methods for federal ministries and institutions.

We often work closely with universities, research institutes and other companies. We also regularly supervise final theses (master theses/dissertations).

The results of our research are regularly published in specialist journals and presented at conferences in posters and lectures. 

Our team includes experts from the fields of biology, landscape ecology, environmental sciences, geography and related qualifications. We also employ administrative staff, data analysts and technicians. 

Our company is organised into project groups with different subject areas, which nevertheless work together on many projects and issues.
