Electrification of the Marschbahn railway line – mapping flora and fauna

Husum,

For several weeks now, BioConsult SH has been recording migratory and breeding birds along the railway line from Heide to Westerland.

A white car with the BioConsult SH logo on the open driver's door stands in the sunset at the Wadden Sea on the edge of a salt marsh. Next to it is a spotting scope on a tripod.

The Marschbahn is an important railway line in Schleswig-Holstein, connecting the mainland with the North Frisian island of Sylt. Many ecologically valuable habitats can be found alongside this route.

As part of the planned electrification, a detailed survey of the affected habitats and species is necessary in order to identify any potential impacts on nature and the environment at an early stage.

This project aims to create a reliable database for ecological assessments and approval procedures through comprehensive mapping. These mappings mark the start of numerous further surveys in the coming months.

The surveys ensure that the Marschbahn railway line, as an important transport infrastructure, can be further developed in line with nature conservation requirements. The project is a significant contribution to sustainable planning and the conservation of ecological diversity in the region.

BioConsult SH is working on behalf of Ingenieurgemeinschaft OBERMEYER Infrastruktur GmbH & CO. KG, Ramboll Deutschland GmbH and Arcadis Germany GmbH that have been commissioned by Nahverkehrsverbund Schleswig-Holstein GmbH to carry out preliminary planning for the electrification project.
