With this flight, BioConsult SH and Primoco UAV have reached another milestone in the use of unmanned aerial systems for offshore monitoring. The successful survey demonstrates the scalability of the new survey platform and highlights its potential for efficient, large-scale offshore surveys.
“This step was hugely important for us and our clients, as simultaneous surveying with two drones allows us to cover large-scale wind farm areas in a single day, thereby offering a genuine alternative to manned digital survey flights,” notes Georg Nehls, Managing Director of BioConsult SH.
The flights took place as part of the SeaMe project run by wind farm operator RWE and were used to survey seabirds and marine mammals using the established HiDef method. Both drones were in operation for more than five hours.
The long-range drones used are equipped with comprehensive safety and communication systems and operate in open airspace in compliance with the highest safety standards. The drones were controlled and monitored by our team of pilots and technicians from a mobile ground station.
As part of the SeaMe project, BioConsult SH is testing the use of drones for environmental monitoring at sea. The aim is to enable CO2-efficient, low-emission and non-intrusive monitoring of birds and marine mammals in the future.
