Onshore wind energy

To date, BioConsult SH has prepared the species protection documentation for more than 400 wind energy projects in Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This includes surveys, expert opinions and species protection reports as well as statements.

By maintaining close contact with the authorities and participating in workshops and training courses, BioConsult SH is always up to date with the latest scientific findings and legal regulations. This applies both to the application of working aids or guidelines and to coordination and consultation with the approval authorities.

We carry out research projects to answer specific ecological questions and develop methods, such as on the flight behaviour of the eagle owl or the systematic search for and analysis of collision victims. We investigate the effectiveness of avoidance measures in the context of wind energy or power line projects, probabilistic methods or technical issues. 

New methods such as networked bird migration radars, modern laser range finders or acoustic sensors are used for special problems. BioConsult SH is furthermore developing an anti-collision system for wind turbines.

We use our expertise to find targeted solutions together with approval authorities and operators in order to implement projects in a nature-friendly way. An example is the Montagu's harrier protection concept in cooperation with 19 operators of one of the largest wind farms on the German west coast. 

Recording and assessment methods are currently being adapted in line with advances in EU and national legislation. BioConsult SH's participation in R&D projects on behalf of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, for example, ensures that these developments receive comprehensive technical and legal support.
